On Tuesday 7th November, a group of 19 children from Stephenson Way Academy attended a Sports hall Athletics event at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. The event started with the girls competing in the field events, while the boys competed in relay races.
All children pushed themselves to their limits and many achieved their own personal bests. Explaining about her field event, one Year 5 girl told us, “Even though I was the smallest one there, I still jumped higher than the rest.” While her team mate said, “My legs started to hurt halfway through my event but I didn’t give up!”
After a while, it was time to swap and the boys did their field events while the girls raced. Although many of the children admitted to feeling nervous, it did not show in their performances. Speaking on behalf of the boys, a Year 6 pupil beaming with pride expressed her thoughts by saying, “All the way through I just kept on trying my best. It was really intense and I feel really proud about how well I did.”
This was a team event in which everyone’s individual scores were added together to give an overall team score. The effort and determination shown by every child resulted in the team winning silver medals and a place in the Sedgefield School Sport Partnership’s final later this month. A huge well done to all involved.
