The town’s Rotary Club held a Geordie Lunch last Sunday at the REME T.A. Centre at Northfield Way using the Drill Hall with kind permission of the C.O.
It was enjoyed by a hundred people some of whom dressed up for the occasion. The Mayor and her consort Wendy and Jed Hillary were among the guests.
Proceeds from the lunch were shared with the Soldiers, Sailors and Airforce Association (SSAFA) and Rotary Charities. The TA sponsored the event by offering the premises and the service of their TA Cooks, Sergeant Malcolm Mooney and Private Sean Heslop.
The tasty meal consisted of Northumbrian Broth and Stotty Cakes, Beef Stew and Mashed Potato followed by Apple Crumble and Custard. Everything was home-made and sourced locally.
After lunch everyone was entertained with traditional Geordie Songs joining in to the rousing choruses of The Lambton Worm and Blaydon Races. John Tobin, Music Teacher at Greenfield provided the accompaniment.
Comedian Bert Draycott’s act, full of northern humour, was well received as the World’s Spoon Playing Champion.
Club President David Anderson thanked the TA for their kind co-operation in hosting the charity lunch which was a resounding success.
