Dear Sir,

I would have thought that, in a supposedly democratic country, a majority vote to leave the EU would mean that we would leave. However, in the Newton News of 16th February there are still three anti-Brexit letters/Articles.

We are celebrating the centenary of the start of the move toward Universal Suffrage. This is a strange time to be saying that the majority ‘Leave’ vote is somehow ‘trumped’ by the minority ‘Remain’ vote. Indeed, left-wing Journalist Polly Toynbee thinks that Leave voters are “Lunatics” and therefore, their votes can be ignored. Not quite the equal voting rights, fought for, and currently enjoyed by, the British electors.

In the article, “Give North East the Power” the writer refers to the leaked Brexit Impact Assessments which show that the greatest negative impact will be on the, Leave voting, North East. Fortunately, we have learned from George Osbourne’s ‘Project Fear’ that our so called economic experts cannot be trusted. They were, and still are all ‘Remainers’. Did anyone really expect them to show that the Leave voting areas would be better off? However, I commend the writer’s insistence that we must “Take Back Control”; firstly, from the EU and thereafter from the Metropolitan Elite.

The Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesman also relies on ‘Project Fear Mark II’. However, he says that, “People did not vote to make ourselves poorer”. Unfortunately, if they believed that ‘Project Fear’ was going to happen, then Leave voters clearly did vote to make themselves poorer. The Remain side cannot have it both ways, either Project Fear was factual but was ignored by the Leave voters, in which case they did vote to make themselves poorer, or as events have proven, it was a Government/ Remain tactic to lie to, and frighten, the electorate. But the majority of the electorate were not as stupid as the Remain Campaign thought!

Remain MEP, Jude Kirton-Darling, advises us that the EU has managed to get its accounts ‘signed off’ by its Auditor since 2007, when a discrepancy of 2% was deemed acceptable.

I would like to make two points about this:

• We ‘donate’ circa. £8 Billion to the EU annually. I calculate that the audited deficiency since 2007 is circa. £1.6 Billion. Given that our budget has run a deficit since Labour’s Bank Crash we have been borrowing to ‘donate’ our £8 Billion and have incurred interest costs. I’m sure that Durham County Council could find something better spend this £1.6 + Billion on rather than let it disappear into the EU’s ‘Black Hole’. 2007 was the first time the EU could get its auditors to sign-off its accounts since 1976! How much of our taxpayers money has been siphoned off by the crooks in the EU between 1976 and 2007? If we accept 2% then I guestimate a deficiency of another £5 Billion! Note also: The Carillion accounts were ‘audited’ and signed-off by international auditors, PWC, only for Carillion to go into receivership soon thereafter.

• I believe that no elected Government can, legally, hand over taxpayer’s money to an organisation that cannot pass audit. That is, between 1976 and 2007 the British Government should have refused to pay money to the EU until such time as its accounts could be properly audited. If your high street bank issued a statement that showed a 2% discrepancy on your account, I’m sure you would think twice before depositing any further money until the discrepancy was made good! Simple Common sense!

Dear Remainers, both sides put forward their best arguments and the voters decided to Leave. It is now time to unite to get a good deal with the EU and take back control of our taxes and spend them fairly all across the UK.
