GACAP (Great Aycliffe Community Aid Partnership) hold their regular monthly meeting on Monday 6th March at 4pm at DISC offices next to Newton Press by the Blue Bridge, Newton Aycliffe. GACAP are a partnership of organisations/charities/ churches whose common interest is to assist people living in the Great Aycliffe area who for one reason or another find themselves in need of help. February’s meeting saw Peter Driver deliver an interesting talk on TTRS. (TOUCH TYPE  READ AND SPELL) a programme to assist those in our community, young and old, who are challenged in education by autism, dyslexia or any form of learning difficulties that slow down educational progress. The presentation in March will be about becoming a  Dementia Friend.

Prime Minister David Cameron challenged the Alzheimers Society in 2012 to set a target of 1 million people enrolled as ‘Dementia Friends’ during the year. This target has been superseded and new targets have been set with the aim of ensuring more and more councils, people, buildings, shops, clubs, charities and businesses become dementia friendly. Members of GACAP, Dorothy Bowman and Joan Mitchie are Dementia Friend Champions equipping them to  explain to people how they can help and better understand  people living with dementia. They will advise all present what it takes to become a ‘Dementia Friend’. As a society we are living longer and more and more people are living at home with various disabilities including dementia. We should individually or corporately, endeavour to increase our understanding to help those living with dementia.

If you would like to know more about GACAP, or if you are interested in becoming a dementia friend, why not come along on the 6th March at 4pm to the DISC offices. There will be refreshments before the meeting and time at the end of the meeting for Networking with other partners.
