Last week 17 children eagerly waiting to become Greenfield students on September 2nd enjoyed a week of opportunities, learning new skills and making new friends hosted at Greenfield Arts.
They experienced several different aspects of the curriculum, applying their literacy and numeracy skills to create a “Play in a day” with the support and expertise of Ruth Johnson. Parents supported this event and were entertained by their children who were transformed from caterpillars to butterflies as they evolve to the next phase of learning. They then went onto enjoy a day at Preston Park, made great use of Room 13 and “The Shed” at Greenfield Arts, where they produced mugs and magnets and finished the week with a morning of cookery skills and an afternoon of circus skills with Circus Central.
As the week progressed the children grew in confidence and took on many challenges which they found exciting as well as being fun. They also embarked on their Bronze “Arts Award” qualification under the direction of Anna Cole.
Melanie Stubbs, Assistant Head who co-ordinates the Summer School said “This is a government initiative that has allowed us to run this transition programme for the last three years. It is extremely worthwhile, allowing those children who may be anxious about moving to a much larger school the opportunity to become acquainted with the environment and make friends with children from other Primary schools. We have had a fantastic week and the children have developed and learned so many new skills which they will apply across the curriculum as Year 7 students. I feel confident that these young people will settle very quickly.”
The Summer school activities were led under the direction of Katy Milne and her enthusiastic team at Greenfield Arts, alongside specialists in different fields. Thanks go to them all for their hard work and commitment, as always Greenfield continues to place the child’s needs first and aims to raise their aspirations.
Well done to everyone involved.
