Over the last 10 weeks parents and pupils have been working alongside Josh Scott, Family Learning Officer at Sunderland AFC Foundation of Light to complete a parenting course at Horndale County Infant & Nursery School.

Foundation of Light’s Family Learning Course welcomes any family member over the age of 19 years and runs for two hours per week. One-hour learning with other adults and one-hour playing fun games with the pupils in the school, for 10 weeks.

This popular family learning programme looks at issues around health and wellbeing aiming to increase learner’s participation in physical activity. The sessions have a theory and practical element to them with the whole family taking part in fun, engaging practical games and activities as well as looking at key elements like, nutrition, benefits of exercise and target setting.

On completing the course, parents and pupils were invited to attend a graduation event to celebrate their achievements as a family at the Stadium of Light. Mum Natasha Grainger and daughter Daisy were awarded the ‘Star of the Term’ award for having an amazing attitude and strong bond.

The course has proved to be very successful and we plan to run the sessions once more in the Autumn Term – for more information see Headteacher, Craig Brown.
