Dear Sir,

Don’t get me wrong I am all for feeding the birds in my garden especially at this time of year. I get great pleasure seeing the different species visiting my garden feeders, knowing that they are getting the vital food that they need to survive this harsh weather.

But I draw the line at people scattering bag loads of bread crumbs on the waste ground at the rear of Dominoes Pizza in Greenwell Road opposite Aldi. I have seen numerous people doing this and all this practice does is to attract the scavengers such as Sea Gulls and Pigeons. I drove along this road on my way to Aldi the other day and it looked like a scene from Hitchcock’s “The Birds” and we all know what happened there.

These birds especially in their numbers present a hazard not only to drivers, but also to small children as it is within their habit to swoop in their attempt to scavenge food.

But apart from that, this practice of strewing bread crumbs is actually called “littering”. The people concerned know who they are and I would like to ask them to desist in this practice, it is a known fact that the public have been advised not to encourage these birds in our town centre by feeding them, and the fact that there are anti-settling spikes in place should be sufficient enough.

Apart from the nuisance aspect, there is the issue of what they leave behind. But before anyone replies by saying that Seagulls and Pigeons are all God’s creatures and need to be looked after as well, so are Mice and Rats but we don’t leave food out for them, or do you?
