Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring had a disappointing 15 run defeat away at Barnard Castle 2nd XI in the NYSD 2nd division. After asking the home team to bat first, Aycliffe were delighted to bowl out Barnard Castle for just 121 after 40.3 overs thanks to some tight bowling from Mark Woodhead, sponsored by Michaela’s Nails, who took 3 for 25 and he was given good support from Colin Myers (2 for 17) and James Layfield-Carroll (2 for 26). In reply, Aycliffe got off to a solid start thanks to an excellent innings by opener Graham Telford who top scored with 41 from just 42 balls, including six boundaries. Unfortunately Aycliffe lost wickets at regular intervals and found themselves in trouble at 82 for 5. Mark Woodhead (13 runs) and Chris Palmer (12 runs) briefly gave the visitors hope, but when they lost their wickets and then the last 3 batsmen all followed quickly without scoring, Aycliffe were all out for 106 from 26.1 overs. The club’s first team play their final game of the season at home to Yarm 1st XI on Saturday 17th September, starting at 12.30pm.
