On Wednesday 1st October pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 of Aycliffe Village Primary School went on a bike ride around Great Aycliffe Way, with teachers from the school and Rio Floreza.
Rio Floreza works on behalf of Sustrans, a charity that promotes using bikes as a sustainable means of transport. Rio Floreza has been working with the school for the past two years. He is trying to get more people on their bikes and to get children more active. He has done several bike rides with the children from the school and all of them have been successful.
After the ride Spencer Davies, one of the participants, said, “It was extremely fun, exhausting, but worth while doing.”
The children of Aycliffe Village Primary School really enjoyed it, and even though it was tiring, would recommend cycling to friends and family.
“I am really glad we got our children outside being active for an afternoon,” says Mr Gargan, Head Teacher of the school.
The ride took the children from their school and around Aycliffe Way – a total of 7 miles. It took the children almost 2 hours to complete their journey. They said, “It was amazing, very exhausting, but we feel very proud of ourselves that we did it.” The Year 5 and 6 children of Aycliffe Village School also said that when the younger pupils get to do it, they will probably think the same and enjoy it.
Rio Floreza said that he was amazingly proud of the children for completing the ride.
