J.S.Bach wrote a remarkable collection of short organ pieces, the Orgelbüchlein – or Little Organ Book, based on well-known German chorales (hymns). It was intended to show organists how the hymns could be played on the organ in a great variety of ways and to help them perfect their mastery of playing the pedals.
